"Keep The Folk Rock Ball Rolling"

Coyote shows off the basic basic tracks of the new American Zen album, LEVEL 4 = KUNG FU COWBOY. He was supposed to play, "Mother's Pearl," instead of, "But I Got."

Coyote proclaims he wants to demonstrate what folk rock is with just a drum set and acoustic guitar. He mentions it also "...it's a rock song because of the attitude..."

Recorded in the Crescenta Valley Park gymnasium where Coyote attends Buddha Kung Fu classes, this album has a large Led Zeppelin sound forming for this KUNG FU COWBOY album by American Zen.

"I Want You To Love Me"

Recorded and completed during his eviction from Tujunga, Coyote had no time to wait for bandmates on this 3rd album of American Zen, so he recorded all the instruments and vocals by himself. This is Coyote's first album as a drummer.

No longer battling the Utah Mormons, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Coyote has been free to pursue love again. So he did--and failed. Since love never has a happy ending, this album is a love story--a quickie love story. Without enough time to write his normal amount of Coyote bitter ballads and lusty love letters, unreleased songs from the past fill in the spaces of this untold love story.

This romance inspired Coyote's newest form of poetry, "Bass Poetry." All the poetry on LEVEL 3 has at least one bass guitar in the background. The first poem, "My Lesbian Neighbors,"  has Coyote mimicking his spoken words on his 1959 Rickenbacker bass as if it were a commercial or movie soundtrack. All the poetry bass tracks were recorded in the order they sit on the album, so an evolution can be heard as Coyote wrote and performed the songs on the album in their album order, all in one night.

The poem, "1,000 Sorrows For A Love," is an especially unique poem. It isn't even a poem. It's a love letter. Actually, a love email. While searching through his journals and floppy disks. Yes, floppy disks. 1.1MB floppies--the biggest! We had to pull our floppy drive out of the attic to download these emails which contained romantic poems from Coyote to Lara.

All the songs on this album had been performed for audiences except for, "I Just Want To Be With You." This song has a driving rhythm similar to songs by Eddie Cochran, who wrote, "Summertime Blues." But this had been written to a prior girlfriend and Coyote wanted to change the words to really "get into it." So, when it came time to record the song, Coyote rewrote all the lyrics, taped them up on the wall in his Tujunga living room recording studio and sung them for the first time.

What we end up with is a "Shopping List for Coyote's Next Girlfriend." This may not be the girl you're looking for, but Coyote specifies exactly what he wants--in one song, "I Just Want To Be With You."

"Michelle Mangione"

This is the first podcast I've done where I haven't chatted at least once on the phone with the featured folk rock artist.

As I was working and sorting through the podcast submissions...and feeling more like an A&R mail room clerk... I remembered why I started these folk rock podcasts: I want to make friends and connections with other folk rock artists. Our goal in featuring "the best and the brightest of today's folk rock artists" is to finally establish folk rock as a current genre.

Folk rock faded into history in the early 70s as concerts became bigger and bigger and folk rock looked smaller and smaller...

The cycle has returned back to folk artists and the audiences wanting more "truth" than stage flares. I hope to set up FOLK ROCK TOURS around the country and weave together many of these folk rock artists I am discovering and promoting with these podcasts. Wow. Maybe even world tours. California, Nashville, and New York, are no longer the hubs of the musical universe as we all connect and promote and release our products on the internet.

It's a new world. It's a new folk rock. But it's got that same concern and hopefullness that those frustrated hippies and peace-love-junkies put into their music in the late sixties and early seventies.

Michelle is a time traveller from that peace-love period that spawned that musical genre we decided to call, "folk rock."

"DownTown Mystic"

This was a fun podcast. I had to squeeze it into the Christmas festivities and then wait another two weeks to edit it. What made it fun was listening to the podcast songs, and looking over to see my daughter tapping her foot just like me to the music of DownTown Mystic.

Thanks guys!

BIOGRAPHY:

DownTown Mystic started as a side project for Sha-La prez Robert Allen while working with his artists.

Veteran tastemaker, Jed The Fish, would play the track "Lost & Found" off of an Industry compilation cd as his "Catch of The Day" on "World Famous" KROQ in LA, one of the most influential modern rock stations. This would lead to some national airplay. When the "Mayor of The Sunset Strip", legendary KROQ DJ Rodney Bingenheimer, played another track, "Brian Jones",

Robert decided to give DownTown Mystic more of a group identity by enlisting the talents of singer/songwriter Bruce Engler.

Robert and Bruce are joined by a host of other talented musicians on "Rock'nRoll 4 The Soul", including one of the great rhythm sections in the history of American Rock'n'Roll--Garry Tallent & Max Weinberg of the E Street Band.

The just completed "Read The Signs" features Paul McCartney/Wings drummer Steve Holley and journeyman/urban legend, Paul Page on Bass.

David Courtenay is a Santa Barbara college actor with great songs who is currently performing southern California clubs and bookstores. His insightful lyrics that detail his spiritual quest include youthful songs that question the meaning of life.

Newest Album Release: To be released February 2008

Featured Album This Show: Rough Mixes of upcoming album.

As a kid he was inspired by Johnny Cash. His country roots led him to Nashville where he pursued a songwriting career. Hooking up with lyricist, Larry Lind, Dennis has worked hard to create compelling songs that range from country music, to folk ballads, and rock'n'roll with a dash of gospel.

In my phone discussions with Dennis he revealed his beliefs and theories regarding the substance of folk rock music. "The folk rock artist is the town crier of music," he explained. "It's music for the heart and soul. You're delivering a message about society."

The songs of Dennis Logan do have something to say with criticisms about how people live and what people may be doing wrong. Watch for his music video for the song, "Whole Things Goin Down," on YouTube.com and other video channels. He just completed shooting it a couple days ago and said it's based on the movie, NETWORK. Thanks to his financial support and publicity team of Eileen Koch, he intends to move up the entertainment ladder very quickly in 2008.

Coyote leads this radio show on a tour of Dennis Logan's SonicBids.com EPK website.
